We know what happened in 2011, but what will happen in 2012?
I previously wrote about the most important events of the past year, and did not try to look into my crystal ball for this year. However, I read on a daily basis predictions in the Western media about events that their advocates assert are coming, definitely, certainly and surely, like the sun rises from the east.

No two people can argue over the fact that Lebanon is the most affected by what happens in Syria, whether positively or negatively, as it has been the case ever since the emergence of Al-Assad’s regime in Damascus and its persisting ambition – both in secret and in public – to subdue its small neighbor, affiliate it with its policies and alliances and push Beirut to emulate its standards. This is true from the simplest details to the general political principles, and what falls between them in terms of security, sovereignty and economy.

Following the announcement by the ruling Baath Party in Syria that its 11th Regional Conference would take place next February, the first reaction was that the party’s move came too late, having been overtaken by the pace of the events. In truth, the protests taking place in Syria would not have broken out, dragging entire areas into repression, violence and bloodshed, had the party still been in touch with ordinary people, as well as the changes that hit the regional and international arenas.

Just like selling the bearskin before catching the bear, the Syrian opposition movements are fighting over the shares while the regime is proceeding down the only path it seems to know, i.e. that of “ongoing killing,” as it was described by Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi while commenting on the mission of the Arab observers.

This is quite simply how one can summarize the “wisdom” of how the supporters of the revolution against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad view the opposition and the relations between the opposition groups, councils, and bodies.
